Covidien’s Hi-Lo Evac™ Endotracheal Tube Selected for Premier QUEST Comparative Innovation Program

BOULDER, CO - Dec. 3, 2008 – Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, today announced that its Hi-Lo Evac™ endotracheal tube was named part of Premier Healthcare Alliance’s QUEST Comparative Innovation Program (CIP).  The Hi-Lo Evac tube, which facilitates continuous aspiration of subglottic secretions (CASS) to reduce ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), was selected based on clinical evidence and potential impact on the five QUEST measurement areas – mortality, cost of care, evidence-based care, patient experience and harm avoidance. (more)

New Study Shows Subglottic Secretions Drainage Reduces Ventilator Associated Pneumonia and Antibiotic Use

BOULDER, Colo. (Nov. 11, 2008) – A two-year randomized study just published in the peer-reviewed journal CHEST (November 2008) demonstrates that continuous aspiration of subglottic secretions (CASS) [i] significantly reduced antibiotic usage in post-cardiac surgery patients. CASS was also found to reduce the incidence of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP), ICU length of stay, and duration of mechanical ventilation in patients intubated for more than 48 hours.

Covidien Announces New Program to Recognize Reduced VAP Infection Rates
Covidien (NYSE: COV, BSX: COV), a leading global healthcare products company and recognized innovator in mechanical ventilation and respiratory care devices, today announced the Zap VAP Recognition Program. This program will publicly recognize hospitals that have successfully reduced their ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) rates.
All Zap VAP Centers of Excellence will be recognized at a reception held at the annual conference of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC) in Denver on June 16. Special recognition is planned for those facilities that have achieved a zero-VAP rate over the last 12 months in at least one clinical unit.
